Hollywood’s been firing out some really poo-tastic movies lately, and it looks like they’re more than willing to keep this little streak going by releasing an “Angry Birds” movie.
That’s according to Variety‘s Marc Graser, who notes that Rovio (maker of the popular game) has brought on David Maisel of Marvel Studios to — ahem — slingshot the game into movie theaters everywhere.
“There has been so much chatter about an ‘Angry Birds’ movie, but it’s now real,” Maisel told. “The process is starting now.”
The “process” is probably more difficult than we want to give credit for: after all, the game is simply about a bunch of cheesed-off birds who are fired from a slingshot in order to kill evil pigs who stole a bunch of eggs.
On the face, it seems absolutely impossible to create anything worthwhile out of that premise. But think back to the awesomeness of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and maybe — just maybe — it’s not that far-fetched.
Also, Maisel has had some “decent” success in Hollywood, working as an executive producer on “Iron Man,” “Hulk,” “Thor,” and “Captain America.”
Sure, those pictures have years and years of built-in storylines from the comic books to lean on, but, hey, slingshots!
“People are interacting with these characters six inches from them each time they play, and that creates an emotional connection,” Maisel said. “This is not an American thing. It’s not even a Finnish thing. It’s a global thing that’s something I’ve never seen before.
“It will be exciting to expand (this intellectual property) within Hollywood.”
Maybe. Or it could end up with millions of parents stuffing themselves full of earplugs for 2.5 hours of animated insanity.
Either way, it’s probably going to end up making a pile of money.
